BACKGROUND
Hipcamp, a leading platform for unique outdoor stays, wanted to showcase the breathtaking diversity of its offerings in a visually stunning and immersive way. But have you ever tried to assemble a motorised camera jib – or even a couple of c-stands – atop a snow-capped mountain? No, neither. Let alone producing capture in a whole host of beautiful, unique and challenging environments. It’s an environmental, logistical and financial nightmare. But luckily we know a thing or two about innovation.
SOLUTION
Entropico partnered with Hipcamp to create Only on Hipcamp – a groundbreaking 38-second hero film spot. The project harnessed the power of virtual production technology and Unreal Engine gaming software to seamlessly blend four disparate shoots across diverse weather conditions and environments into a studio shoot.
Shot on a virtual production stage in just a single shoot day, we used Unreal Engine to create a world in which we see multiple environments reveal themselves all within the interior perspective of a tent. From the allure of the arid deserts to the frigid majesty of snow-capped mountains, we were able to show viewers that your tent is the gateway to your dream destination.
Thanks to The Mandalorian, “Virtual Production” is a bit of a present day buzz term in the filmmaking space. But what actually is it, you ask? In essence, virtual production is an evolution of shooting an actor in front of a background or green screen, but just really, really good looking.
Key visual renders, realtime Unreal Engine environments and an LED volume combine to create an aesthetically rich world for characters with a broad scope for imagination. Shooting in a studio environment gives control to the production – so you don’t need to worry about location logistics, the weather or even gravity – and background detail, colour and lighting adjustments allow for flexibility and attention to detail.
In terms of workflow, using approved key visuals, our Unreal Engine team can create responsive environments for backgrounds - created to resemble any world we desire. These images are robust and flexible; responding to physical camera movement and the behaviour of our talent or product in the studio. Placing real talent or product in UE environments allows us to push creative boundaries past the outer limits of real world possibility.
