BACKGROUND

Square makes all kinds of tools for independent businesses: from payments and point of sale to e-commerce and loans. It feels like they make products for every aspect of running a business. Almost.

SOLUTION

Mogul to Mogul – adapted from Square’s Everything your business needs. Almost. global platform – uses unexpected humour to focus in on everything Square can do for sellers by being really honest about everything Square can’t do.

EXECUTION

Square took a bold leap with us in their tone of voice, and together we made point of sale and e-comm technology, well, funny. The campaign lived across OOH, Digital Display ads, social video, TVC, and a very Internet-y 11-minute comedy film, and key to its success was the direction of Adult Swim alumni Henry Stone (Aaron Chen: A Life in Questions) and standup talent Danielle Walker (Taskmaster) front and centre in the “mo-gal” host position. The businesses we profiled were real, their problems relatable, and the results unexpected and rewatchable thanks to Walker and Stone’s comic talent.

RESULTS

The series uniquely positioned Square within its category, making strong use of genre to explore the humanity of the sellers while also passing the Millennial BS test. The spot earned director Henry Stone an ADG Best Direction nomination, and Square and Entropico praise in mainstream and trade press. Take it from us: running a business is tough. But at least we can provide our fellow moguls some light relief (and quality software)
