BACKGROUND

Analog horror is a YouTube horror subgenre where creators mimic analog aesthetics such as old VHS tapes and public access TV to create unique stories full of suspense and focuses more on the atmosphere than jump scares. YouTube aimed to celebrate this passionate and creative community, where fans and creators collaborate to expand the genre’s lore, share theories, and produce fan-made content that pushes the boundaries of its eerie, retro style.

SOLUTION

YouTube creator Spencer Lackey was enlisted to explore the world of analog horror, casually browsing through the community’s eerie VHS-style videos and analyzing their unsettling elements. As he dives deeper into the content, unexplainable strange and creepy things start to happen, and the line between reality and fiction blurs.

EXECUTION

Analog horror has carved a niche on YouTube, and this video dives deep into the unsettling world of this genre, following Spencer Lackey as he explores the chilling content. The partially scripted narrative takes viewers on a tense journey as Spencer analyzes various analog horror videos, only to find himself drawn deeper into the disturbing universe.

From a technical standpoint, the project unfolded over four months, from creative planning to shooting and post-production, with a particular focus on visual and audio design to enhance the tension. The video is brought to life through a mix of lo-fi, VHS-style effects, glitchy visuals, and production techniques that mirror the aesthetic of analog horror itself.

RESULTS

The launch was brilliantly timed on October 4th as viewers were excited with Halloween around the corner. This video received over 7 million views in 12 days with no paid media. On October 31st, a bespoke YouTube logo change will happen launching more excitement for this genre.
